Do you think aging is all about giving up on the things you like the most? It may seem that way, but really, the media just focuses too much on the negative side. Growing older doesn't have to mean you can't have fun, as is proven by Leroy and his blue motorcycle:
On Saturday, I caught this photo of Leroy's motorcycle. Leroy is a familiar presence around town thanks to his robin's egg blue ride, which he custom built himself.
Leroy and his wife are elderly. She is partially disabled, Yet he makes sure she can still ride. See the trailer with the travel case? Bikers don't like pulling trailers. Especially for short events that take only a few hours.
No complaint from Leroy though. That is where his wife's mobility aide is stored while they ride. As soon as they arrived (a little slower than the other bikers, but just as happily), other riders carefully moved their own motorcycles to allow the blue trike plenty of room to park, close to the raffle tables and food vendors, so that the couple would not have to walk far.
Leroy patiently unlocked, and unfolded his wife's Rollator from the "trunk". Not only is this a beautiful example of a couple sharing something together, it is also a statement against elderly stereotypes.
Why can't you have fun just because you are older? No one would ever think to exclude people like Leroy from the events just because he is older. In fact, if you attend many motorcycle events, you will quickly notice that the majority of riders are 50 and up. Several years ago, the oldest rider in attendance at this annual event was 91. Incidentally, that was also the speed he liked to ride!
So let Leroy and his wife set an example for everyone. Aging is about attitude. And if you have the right attitude, you can still go as far (if not as fast) as you like.
